Sport

  • 479 Number of competitive sports fixtures in the academic year 2015/16

Sport is an important feature of life at RMS and we promote excellence in sport and sport for all.

Our indoor facilities are superb, and the 200 acres of parkland are ideal for cross-country running and adventure-based learning.

Traditional sports including netball, hockey, swimming, gymnastics, tennis, rounders and athletics are taught throughout as well as sports such as volleyball, basketball, squash and sports leadership. Senior girls may also opt for more recreational activities such as salsa or streetdance. Girls are encouraged to take part in leadership and coaching activities and links with many external sports clubs provide them with opportunities to pursue their interests. Physical Education is offered at both GCSE and AS/A2 level.

Throughout the year regular fixtures are arranged against numerous schools in all major sports, with girls competing in friendly, district and county leagues. As well as competitive team training, recreational clubs are provided in a range of sports, which are accessible to all.

Expert coaching in a number of sports is offered to the girls as part of the extensive extra-curricular sports programme and many girls pursue awards and qualifications in these sports.

Sport Teams

RMS girls feature regularly in district, county and regional competitions. Many girls represent the county in a variety of sports including netball, gymnastics, hockey, swimming, athletics, squash, cricket and badminton to name a few.

RMS teams have recently competed at national level in swimming and gymnastics. We have numerous sports teams, which all girls are invited to trial for at the beginning of each season. Those girls who do not make the sports teams may be invited to train with the team or attend ‘club’ training in order to develop their skills. These include:

  • Netball - Year 7 A & B , Year 8 A & B, Year 9 A & B, Year 10 A & B, Year 11 & Senior
  • Hockey - Year 7 A & B, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 & Senior
  • Badminton - Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 & Senior
  • Football - Years 7 - 10
  • Swimming - Years 7 - 13
  • Gymnastics - Years 7 - 13
  • Rounders - Year 7 A & B, Year 8 A & B, Year 9 A & B, Year 10 A & B & Senior
  • Tennis - Year 7 A & B, Year 8 A & B, Year 9 A & B, Year 10 A & B & Senior
  • Athletics - Years 7-13.

It is important that girls and their parents appreciate the commitment demanded by selection to a school team. Academic work missed for fixtures/matches must be made up as quickly as possible.  All practices are held either at lunchtime or after school. with training and fixture dates being given to each girl at the beginning of each term/season and displayed on sports-specific notice boarders. Fixtures are also available to view on the Parent Portal and on the website calendar.

Facilities

RMS are rightfully proud of their stunning sports facilities.  The main sports hall has a mondo rubber-floored hall which converts to either 8 badminton courts, 2 tennis courts, 2 volleyball courts, 2 netball courts or an indoor hockey pitch. Bleecher seating provides ample spectator space and the shallow profile of the hall also supports viewing galleries. Such balcony areas offer themselves to activities such as martial arts, table tennis and fencing.

The newly equipped fitness suite which is now run with the expert health and well-being skills of Nuffield Health, has an extensive range of both cardiovascular and resistance training, for an all-round body workout. Additional facilities include 4 glass-backed squash courts, 2 studios for pilates and yoga and a separate sprung-floored gymnasium, used for gymnastics, trampolining, dance, aerobics and self-defence classes. Beyond the sports hall complex, our brand new full sized floodlit astro turf is the pride and joy of the sports teachers.  Through the wonderful support of the Campaign for Excellence by our parents, old girls and the RMS community as a whole, the astro turf was commissioned and built during the Hilary Term of 2015.

With the School site extending to 200 acres of beautiful parkland which surround 3 sides of the School we are able to enjoy extensive activities within the School grounds. Cross-country running, outdoor adventure activities and Duke of Edinburgh training all take place within our own parkland. Additional sporting venues include 4 outdoor netball courts, 10 tennis courts, 4 high quality grass football pitches and a heated indoor swimming pool which is located in the main school buildings.

My daughter loves school. She is always challenged but at the same time having fun. All the staff are very supportive, approachable and always have time to answer any questions or concerns I have Parent
