Teaching and Learning

Ruspini House marks the starting point on your son or daughter's biggest and most exciting journey - their education. Our primary purpose is to support both you and your children through the early years of this adventure.

At Ruspini House, your sons and daughters will be cared for by highly trained staff with Early Years qualifications. As we all know, children develop at a different rate, and so our experienced and passionate staff focus on each child's needs and talents to promote development at an individual pace. We understand that children learn to be independent and strong as a result of the secure relationships that they experience and so your son or daughter wil be assigned a "key person", who will have special responsibility for them - namely ensuring that they feel safe and comfortable in their setting.

Ruspini House staff practise a holistic approach to the education of young children, following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum which endorses children's learning through play.  “Play underpins all development and learning for young children.  Providing well planned experiences based on children’s spontaneous play, both indoors and outdoors, is an important way in which practitioners support young children to learn with enjoyment and challenge”. (EYFS).

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework

The EYFS framework explains how and what your child will be learning to support their healthy development.  Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through seven areas of learning and development which is made up of three Prime Areas and four Specific Areas of development and learning.  Children should mostly develop the prime areas first where they begin to develop quickly in response to relationships and experiences, and continue to be fundamental throughout the EYFS.  These are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development;
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language

These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning.

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in four specific areas which are essential skills and knowledge for children to participate in society.  These are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts

Learning through Play

Play underpins the delivery of the EYFS.  Children at Ruspini House will have the opportunity to play indoors and outdoors, being offered experiences based on spontaneous play, child initiated play and adult directed activities.  Staff will support children to learn with enjoyment and challenge them through well planned experiences.

Play helps young children to learn and develop through doing and talking, which research has shown to be the means by which young children learn to think.  Our setting uses the practice guidance of the EYFS to plan and provide a range of play activities which help children to make progress in each of the areas of learning and development.  In some of these activities children decide how they will use the activity and, in others, an adult takes the lead in helping the children to take part in the activity

Learning Journals

Ruspini House keeps a Learning Journal for each child which is shared with their parents on a regular basis. The journal records each child's achievements and monitors his/her progress and personal well-being needs. Interests and activities are also logged to ensure that we fully understand each child.

Our desire to encourage parental involvement creates an open and positive environment for everyone at Ruspini House and it is with great pride that we watch the children thrive and progress. As we celebrate their successes with their parents, so too we discuss their progress, next steps and any specific support needed. We care deeply for each and every child in our care and we enjoy the partnerships we create with their parents.

 

Your Child's Key Person

We understand at Ruspini House that children learn to be strong and independent from secure relationships, therefore, each child is assigned a key person.  A key person has special responsibilities for working with a small number of children, giving the reassurance to feel safe and be cared for and building relationships with their parents.  The role of the key person is to ensure the child is familiar with the setting and to make the child feel confident and safe within it. The key person will talk to parents/carers and ensure that the needs of the child are being met, and feel confident and safe within Ruspini House.

I have found Ruspini House an excellent choice in nursery and have noticed a marked improvement in A since her joining in September. She seems to be very well stimulated and I have not seen her this happy at her previous nurseries. She is only three and a half and already writing her name! Ruspini House Parent
